The Four Tendencies

In one of my groups, someone posted a link to The Four Tendencies Quiz. I love taking personality quizzes, so I clicked over there ASAP. My result surprised me and I took the test again. And again. Four times and I got the same result every time. I still don't think it fits me.

The four tendencies are:

Upholder - this person meets inner and outer expectations
Obliger - this person meets outer expectations, but resists inner expectations
Questioner - meets inner expectations, but resists outer expectations
Rebel - resists inner and outer expectations

I scored as a rebel. Four times. For real.

Where I see myself is as an obliger. I take care of whatever I'm assigned at work and almost never resist. The one exception was when one of my co-workers wanted me to be a stenographer. I don't have the skills to be an admin or the temperament for it. But in general, tell me you need something done and I do it. I'm very good at meeting expectations.

However, when it comes to my inner expectations, I often fail to meet them. Not all the time. I make To Do lists every weekend and I always finish the critical items like groceries and laundry.

I am contrary, though. I like to do things my way, and as long as it gets done correctly, why can't I do it the way I want? I'm also notorious for asking for someone's opinion and choosing the opposite. Like there are two pairs of shoes I want to purchase, but can only get one. If I ask someone which one I should buy and they say pair A, I will end up buying pair B.

So I'm not sure where this leaves me. A rebel in denial? A mis-characterized Obliger? Hmm.

I'm a Dolphin

***Disclaimer: I received no compensation for this post. I do not know the doctor who created the quiz and I have not read his book. I read a news article online and thought this was interesting. Nothing more.***

I found an article online that talked about chronotypes. There's basically a theory that there isn't just night owls and early birds, but that there are actually four different chronotypes--Lion, Wolf, Dolphin, and Bear.

There's a brief quiz at The Power of When website to figure out which type you are. I took it and found out that I fit in the Dolphin category. I don't think I'm a pure dolphin, though, because not everything in the description is correct for me. A lot of it, however is right on the money and makes me believe there is something to this 4 type thing.

Dolphins are cautious (yes), introverted (yes), neurotic (maybe), and intelligent (I like to think so). They strive for perfection (I'm a raging perfectionist), have OCD tendencies (guilty, although definitely not full-blown), and are detail oriented (oh, yeah).

Lions appear to be the morning people. Bears cycle on the sun and are about 50% of people. Wolves are the night owls.

The site also talks about how these different body clocks evolved in prehistoric times to keep a tribe safe. The wolves stay up until the earliest lions wake up, then drift off and the dolphins awake at the slightest noise to warn the group.

Anyway, I found this premise interesting and the part that really sold it for me was that dolphins wake up tired and get a kick of energy late in the evening. This is totally me. It's frustrating, too, because I have to get up so early for my day job. I'd love to wake up refreshed and be able to go to bed earlier without tossing and turning. Alas, I am not genetically predisposed according to this website.

Massive Fail

Yesterday I saw a quiz on my Facebook timeline. Can We Guess Who You Are In Only 20 Questions? It sounded intriguing, so I did the quiz. According to this, I am a 30-year-old male who's recently become a father.

Massive fail.

As I discussed this on Twitter, a couple of us found the quiz questions problematic. The ones that I found particularly bothersome was how long do you spend getting ready? And how many times do you cook per week?

I retook it and changed my answers to the three questions I found most sexist. I figured if I switched my choices and this time it guessed I was female, I'd have my smoking gun so to speak.

This didn't happen. In the quiz's favor, this go-round made me a teenage male. Still a massive fail, but at least these three questions alone weren't the determining factors.

The quiz invited people to post how accurate it was in the comments. I wanted to check them out so I could talk about it here, but I can't find any comments. It might be my computer. I have it personalized far past what most people do to their systems and I might have a setting that blocks me from seeing comments.

I also saw on Facebook from a different friend that it was a massive fail for her as well. So far I know one person who found it accurate and three of us going, huh?

The Greek Mythology Personality Test

I found this on Joely's blog.

Your Score: Nemesis

0% Extroversion, 100% Intuition, 72% Emotiveness, 47% Perceptiveness

You are a normally quiet person with very strong convictions and a marked activist streak. You have a clearly defined sense of right and wrong, and you like seeing people punished for their transgressions. You are Nemesis, goddess of punishment. You are a champion for the defenseless, you love poetic justice and, if karmic retribution doesn't have its say, then you'll have yours. You are astute, rarely fooled, and idealistic.

Your defining characteristic is your internal and inflexible system of morals. Because of your highly intuitive nature, you possess the theoretical nature required to define those morals, but you sometimes lack the ability to verbalize and expound on them, especially on the more nuanced parts of your worldview. Regardless, you have strong instincts which often prove to be correct, and rather than preaching, you act on them. You don't compromise -- ever.

You can sometimes be a person of great internal stress. You don't have double standards, and so you expect the same of yourself as you expect of others. You might find, sometimes, that you have just as hard of a time in living up to those expectations as the people around you. As a result, you are rarely at peace with yourself, but you're also likely to think of this in a positive light -- you're always forcing yourself to improve, and you avoid making mistakes.

You tend to be a private person, and don't like to talk much about those staunch morals of yours until, that is, they become violated. Once that happens, everyone is going to know exactly where you stand. You have a distaste of nihilism and intellectual relativism that will make you naturally compatible with scientists and certain kinds of philosophers, even if they don't share your activist streak.

Famous People like you: Goethe, Voltaire, Susan B. Anthony, Robert Burns

Similar Personality Types: Prometheus, The Oracle, Hermes, Orpheus

Avoid: Icarus, Dionysus, Agamemnon, Atlas

You may or may not be able to get along with an Odysseus -- it will depend on his/her upbringing.
