I have my gaming chair that I'm using as a desk chair. It took two hours to assemble although people in the reviews said it took them an hour. I guess my dad and I work slower. Also, the video instructions didn't match my chair even though I clicked the link on the manufacturer's website that allegedly led to the correct video.
Overall, though, assembly wasn't bad. We had one hiccup, but it was obvious quickly that we'd made a mistake and I figured out the correct way pretty easily. I'm calling this a win.
I ordered the version with the footrest because I thought it would be cool to kick back and write sometimes, but it only took a couple of hours to hate it. What bugged me was that when it was supposedly stowed underneath the seat, it would slide out and hit the backs of my calves. All the time.
Overall, though, the chair is more comfortable than my old chair. I had to ditch the lumbar pillow that came with the chair and replaced it with my old backrest cushion that I'd ordered when the other chair became too much to deal with. But again, that's minor.
The only thing that I hate about this chair--so far--is that it smells horrible! I'm hoping that the odor will dissipate over time. It might already be doing this because I used to be able to smell it walking down the hallway to my office, but I can't any longer. It's still pretty strong, though, and I'm not sure anything smells worse than fake leather. :-(
If the stink goes away, then I'd give the chair a thumbs up, but right now, my response is meh.

Desk Chair Hell
My desk chair has been annoying me for a long time now, but I put up with it because I generally didn't spend much time sitting in it. That changed after I got two monitors and a docking station for my laptop. Not only am I working from home one day a week for my day job, but now I'm writing in my office, too. The chair's shortcomings have become more and more unbearable. So has the neck, back, and hip pain.
This is not a cheap chair. I spent a lot of money on it at an office surplus company. They charged 50% of what the chair cost new, so the price tag was astronomical for the first owner. I know now why they got rid of it when it was almost brand new and in perfect shape. Clearly, they'd been sitting in it all day.
After a little bit of research, I decided to get a gaming chair. They are designed for long sitting sessions and that's what I need--something that will let me sit and write for long stretches of time. I'm not sure which particular chair I'm going to get, not yet, but the idea of not hobbling when I stand up is vastly appealing.
I really hope this is my answer.

Chairs
When I lived in Minnesota, I only had a eat-in area in my great room, but in my current home, I have a dining room and an eat-in kitchen area. I have my table and chairs in the dining room and now I'm thinking it's time to get a table for the kitchen, too.
Which brings me to chairs. I'd love to have hugely comfortable chairs for this table. The chairs that came with my dining table look like they should be comfortable, but they're not. I even tested them out at the furniture store, but discovered there's a big difference between comfortable for a few minutes and comfortable for half an hour or longer.
One of my favorite memories growing up is sitting around the kitchen table in my parents' house and being able to talk or have a notebook out and jot things down. Or now, I'd like to sit at the table in the mornings and drink coffee or work on the computer.
So how do I find a comfortable chair? It's not like I can go to a furniture store and sit in each one I like for an hour to find out if it's going to work. Do I take the word of other people who've purchased a chair and declared that it's comfortable? It might not be reliable because what works for one person might not work for another and they might have used the chair completely differently than I would.
I kind of know what I want--a white chair with a leather/leather-look material, preferably with nickel legs, but I'm not opposed to wood. I want the leather/fake leather so that it will be easier to clean, but I love the brightness of white. I also like that keyhole back look that I've seen on HGTV, although I'm not set on that yet. Then there's the super cool mid century modern chair I found. I'd have to go with fabric and not fake leather, but it was named the second-most comfortable dining chair by a magazine and I like the shape of it. It's also $500 a chair, which makes me cringe. That's a lot of money for one chair.
Too bad there isn't some website that gives comfort ratings to chairs. Like this chair is a 5 star chair; I could sit in it for two hours and not moan when I stood up. Now this would be helpful.

At Last People Can Sit Down
My furniture is fixed! My furniture is fixed!
For those of you who haven't heard the story, I moved out of my house in MN in July and into a house in GA. I made it with just a few strained nerves and some stress. My furniture wasn't so lucky.
The most painful damage was the couch. It had two legs broken from it and that left one comfortable chair. When my parents are visiting, that's not cool.
I also had the movers smash the corner on my dining room table and they did more damage than that. Now that's fixed and so are the nicks and scrapes that they inflicted.
The broken hinge on my jewelry amoire and the giant scrape where they took off the stain and finish? Fixed!
Broken coffee table drawer, dings and nicks on my entertainment center, damage to my stereo cabinet. Fixed, fixed, fixed!
I'm so excited that my furniture looks the way it's supposed to again. :-)

Bang! Crash!
Most of my worldly goods have been up in Minnesota while I've been living in Atlanta for the past year and a half. I was finally reunited with them on Monday, July 22nd when the movers arrived at my new home in Georgia.
The reunion wasn't all that it should have been.
It started when the guys unloading the truck brought in my coffee table. It has two drawers and one of them had the front busted off. I could see it lying on the inside of the drawer itself.
Later, they brought in my old stereo console and announced they'd found it with the wheel busted off where the wood met the bottom. One of the guys Gorilla Glued it to the bottom and put in some wood screws.
But if I thought that was the worst I'd see, I was wrong. When it came time to put the bed together, my dad opened the box marked "Parts" to get out the hardware the movers would need and discovered a chair leg. As it turned out, the leg had been ripped off my sofa. My grandmother's sofa that's like 85 years old and had withstood years of rambunctious children and other insults.
As bad as I felt about the drawer and the stereo, they did not compare to the sick feeling I got when I saw this. It had to have been torn off in Minnesota because it had been sealed inside the parts box and that had been started and closed by the loaders.
How the hell do you rip the leg off someone's sofa? Seriously. Talk about a complete disregard for other people's stuff.
Later, I discovered a smudge on the back of one of my chairs, a nick in my pristine dining room table, and an odd stain (I think it's a stain) on the side of my dining room table. And I've barely begun to open boxes. I'm scared at what I'll find.
I have to say that I'm totally not impressed with the movers at this point, not with the damage and destruction they caused. At least the only thing I know that is missing is my step ladder. Hopefully, everything else made it, even if it wasn't in one piece.

Just Call Me Handy Andi
While my parents were still in Atlanta, my dad (with some help from me) assembled a night stand, a TV stand, and a coffee table. I didn't think I needed anything else. That soon proved to be a wrong assumption.
I had a chair next to the recliner that I put the phone on, the TV remote, my box of Puffs tissues, and assorted other things as the situation dictated. The top of the folding chair was far too small for everything I wanted at hand and there was much grumbling from me as I shifted things around. I finally admitted I needed an end table and it arrived today. Some assembly required.
This was my first time assembling anything on my own. I counted out my parts and ensured everything was present and accounted for. I checked the wood to make sure it was in good condition and then I began putting legs on the table.
The directions failed to mention I needed a Phillips screwdriver. They provided an Allen wrench and I thought that was all I needed. Luckily, my dad left some tools here or I would have had to run out and bought one today.
Other than that, things went relatively smoothly last night. Except for one thing. The end table wobbles. It's not too bad and it'll have to be good enough until my dad comes down again and can fix my assembly.

Some Assembly Required
My new furniture is assembled! Yea! My dad came over on Saturday and we spent about seven hours or so putting it all together. On the plus side, the size of the coffee table is perfect and I was exactly right--anything larger would overwhelm the space and make it impossible to walk. On the minus side of things, the furniture was cheap and it looks it. :-( Considering it took me more than a year to find this stuff, I'm keeping it. I figure in a couple of years I can start looking again and this time get nicer tables. I just needed something now because it was darn near impossible to spread papers out on the couch and I was using the step ladder as an end table. And as I look, I'll at least have something usable.
Of course, the assembly did not go smoothly. In the first end table, my dad used the long screws in the drawer and cracked the wood. It was an easy mistake to make because they had pictures of all the parts and labeled them with letters. The directions said use the M screws, and in the image, the M screws looked longer than the N screws. It was a misrepresentation. Looking at the picture of the screw heads, the N screw had the Phillips head and that was what was supposed to go in the drawer.
Second piece that went together was the coffee table. The left drawer would not fit. It got stuck like half way. We decided that maybe the drawer was just bigger or something and my dad worked to sand down the piece it slides against. It still wouldn't fit. As it turns out, the two sides of the drawers were designed differently. Once he disassembled them, switched the sides out, and put them together again, it all worked.
By the time we were finished, I had bits of Styrofoam all over my house and sawdust from where my dad was sanding the inside of the coffee table.
Saturday we also dosed the amaryllis with the gnat killer stuff the nursery recommended. It doesn't kill adults, though, just the larvae, but how long can adult gnats live anyway? And without any little replacement gnats being born, their residence should come to an end, right?

Bugged?
It snowed again yesterday. :-( That meant my usual 25 minute commute expanded to an hour and a half. Make that a white-knuckled hour and a half. Top speed was about 30 miles an hour, but most of the drive was at 1o mph. That was a good thing because the roads were horrible. It's up early today and out the door ASAP because of the conditions.
The only thing that made the day bearable was arriving home and finding my coffee table and end tables on the door step! Yea! The problem was dragging snow covered boxes into the house. I'm hugely excited to have these tables and absolutely can't wait to fold up the step ladder (my makeshift coffee table) and put it away. I just have to get my dad to come over and assemble the new furniture. :-/
On the plant front, I talked here about the bugs in my amaryllis. The nursery suggested some stuff that mixes with water, goes into the soil, and kills them. I can't wait for that to arrive. They said the bugs are harmless, just a nuisance, but I don't like them in my house. I don't care if they are harmless. I'll also have to dose my bamboo plant with this stuff, I guess. The guy said that the bugs will make their way to other plants in the house and that's all I have.
Speaking of bugged, last night just before midnight, the phone rang. Wrong number. Not only was it a wrong number, it was someone's computer trying to connect to the internet. I've had calls like that on my voice mail when I've gotten home from work, but I never had a call in the middle of the night before. You'd think the fact that they've never connected dialing my number might encourage the person to delete it. Apparently not. Grrr.

Reappearing Friends and a Furniture Near Miss
What is going on with MySpace friends? I know they were cleaning out the deleted profiles, but yesterday about half the number I lost started to magically reappear. There hasn't been an announcement about that as yet--at least not that I've seen.
I heard back from my agent yesterday about the synopsis I sent her and had some small changes to make. I wanted them done last night, but I got hung up on one item and didn't quite make it. At 10pm, I finally went to bed. And again, my mind didn't shut down leaving me with yet another night short on sleep.
Oh, I almost forgot! Those of you who are regulars know my coffee table saga. Here's the latest installment. I went back online to the Coffee Tables Galore site to see if they had anything new in, and on the home page I see this totally fabulous round table! I loved it! All excited, I click to check out the details--and discover the table is 39 inches in diameter.
My hopes--my excitement--were dashed. The coffee table of my dreams is too big for the space I have. I measured it out anyway, wanting there to be some way that it would fit. There wasn't.
I checked out the matching end table, hoping that maybe that would work. Unfortunately, it didn't. It was only as wide as the ottoman and that meant if I had my laptop down on it, there'd be no room for my coffee cup. My search will have have to continue.

The Dog Days of Flowers
My filing cabinet arrived yesterday, and guess what? They cleaned all the adhesive off before delivering it! I really thought I'd be spending the weekend trying to get that crap off. And the other cool thing is that the unit matches the small, two-door filing cabinet I already have in the room.
Now I just have to get all my stuff arranged in there. Unfortunately, I have a lot of it, so this isn't necessarily going to be quick or easy. I might start with the mish mash sitting on my bookshelves now because I had nowhere else to put it. That's been one of my biggest frustrations--trying to get to my research books with all this other stuff around them.
My mutantly large lily bloomed this week! I don't know if you can tell how much larger it is than the other lilies from the pictures, but it must be like 15% bigger. It's been a hard-fought war with the rabbit, but the fence did the trick. I have one more bud left to bloom, then my flowers will be done for the year.
First, here's a typical lily with a ruler next to it so you can get an idea of the size.
Now, here's the mutant lily. Sorry, no ruler. There wasn't one handy.

And finally, here is another plant with two flowers on the stem. It also has one more bud on it, which will be my last flower of the year.
I don't have any pictures of them, but my three surviving Toad Lilies shot up a lot in the last week or so. I'm thinking all the rain we've had helped them. Most of the flowers in the deck boxes are okay. The pansies look like they've had enough, but everything else looks okay. Next year, though, I'm not planting any wussy flowers. Those impatiens and begonias wilted all the time if they were even slightly dry. Petunias, though--those are hardy plants. :-)

My Exciting Wednesday
Okay, so I ran into one glitch on the new network hook up. I can't get any email to send off my laptop now unless I use my cable internet account. I totally don't get this since I've been sending messages from my desktop computer off my old email addresses and the settings are exactly the same. I even wrote it all down just in case my memory was faulty. This is going to be a pain until I can figure it out. I don't want to change my email addresses so that means I have to get it to work. Anyway, I got tired and gave up, but today is another day.
So what happened on Wednesday that was so exciting? Besides the high speed on my laptop, I mean. :-) After work, I went to an used office furniture place and got my five drawer lateral filing cabinet! I've been wanting one of those for like a year now, and while it's a little banged up, it was also 1/3 the cost of a new one. I can live with the adhesive residue on the exterior for that kind of savings.
Then, while I was there, I spotted used desk chairs. The really nice ergonomic kind! I've been sitting on a office chair from probably the 1960's, long before anyone had heard of the word ergonomic. I would literally hobble after I'd been sitting in it for any length of time. The chair was twice the cost of the cabinet, but once I get it all set up for me, it'll be worth it. Plus, now I rolled the $5 chair into the scrapbook room. :-) Now I can be hobbled if I do crafts. Anyway, if I'd bought it new, the guy said it would have been like $1000. =8-O Used is a good thing.
I also got my really cool chipboard letters and figures yesterday and my card making kit. How cool is that? With a chair, a cutter, and those super fabulous letters, I seriously need to get scrapbooking.
And yes, there was writing done as well. I finally felt as if I made some good progress yesterday during lunch. Of course, I got very little done after all the running around and installing that I did, but I'm hopeful that at lunch today, I'll start chugging right along again.

The Two Cs
I think I maybe might have found a coffee table! It's round, which I'm not 100% thrilled about, and at 28" wide, it's slightly bigger than I'd like, but overall, I like it. I have to go to the store and look at it in person, though. It was in an advertisement my parents received, and while it was on sale, it's still more than I wanted to spend and it's not a decision I'm making from a picture. :-) But it has the shelf and the drawer that I wanted, plus it's on casters for easy sliding around while I vacuum, which is a definite asset. The end tables that go with it are much too big, (and outrageously expensive, more so than the coffee table) so I'd still have to search for those, but the coffee table is the critical piece of furniture I need. The end tables can wait.
It's crowded in my head right now. Not only do I have the characters for the proposals I'm sort of working on, but I have characters for stories I don't plan to write hanging around as well. It's actually kind of cool since I haven't had this in years and I take it as a good sign. I really wish, though, that I could figure out what Logan and Shona's story is and who their bad guy is so that I could move forward with that proposal. I've got the first chapter in my head--mostly--but that's about it.
I think that's all I have to say today. =8-O No one is more shocked than me. :-) Enjoy your Sunday, y'all.
